Sawdust Road is a 5-piece progressive band out of Houston, Texas. Their music has a unique mission statement: the music of today with the feel of yesterday! The group is built around the powerhouse vocals of Mary Michelle.
Not content just to have a stock backing band, Michelle has assembled a cast of musicians with impressive resumes by anyone’s standards! These credits include gold records, stints in national recording acts, appearances on national TV, national tours, and performances at major venues and events including the NAMM convention, Texas State Fair, and opening gigs for label acts too numerous to mention.
This unique group of musicians have united to create music that brings back that feel-good vibe of the 70’s, with elements of Rock, Pop, Country, and even a pinch of Soul thrown in for good measure.
2016, Sawdust Road was honored to win a Josie Music Award for Modern Country Album of the Year.
2017 Josie Award nominee for “Song of the Year”, “Entertainer of the Year” and “Group of the Year”
Sawdust Road is:
Mary Michelle — Lead Vocals – Singing since the age of 5, she left her heart in East Texas and found a love of country music. She made the difficult choice to forgo her country band in college – and the opportunity for a country music career – to raise a family. In the past, she’s toured Texas with a Christian rock band and has recorded a Country Christian CD splitting her time between studios in Nashville and Texas. Michelle has been a serious writer for the past 12 years and in 2012 came back to her heart – country music. She started Sawdust Road and hasn’t looked back. This is definitely “Not your momma’s country music,” as she likes to say.
Bill Landrith — Bass – Bill started playing bass in 1984 when a friend’s band lost their bass player and approached him to be the replacement. He had never picked up a bass guitar before but accepted the challenge. Another friend of his had an old bass in pieces and he gave it to Bill. Bill put it back together and to his astonishment it worked great. He then sat down and learned China Grove by The Doobie Brothers and the rest is history. He has never looked back. Bills latest project is the progressive country band Sawdust Road.
John Lange — Guitar, Vocals – John is a veteran of the music industry with years of experience playing and recording. He cut his teeth in the Midwest, touring with several bands. In Dallas in the mid 80’s he joined a band named Safety In Numbers which gained considerable record label interest. Their release “Sinking In Air” was placed in regular rotation on KDGE The Edge, quite an accomplishment for a local band. They appeared on the national TV show Star Search, and also opened up concerts for The Romantics, The Tubes, Dennis Miller, and others. In July 2013 he joined Sawdust Road as a guitarist.
Henry Saloman — Keyboards, Vocals – Born in Brooklyn, New York, Henry was raised in Old Bridge, New Jersey. In the 80’s, he was the lead singer of a Pennsylvania based band called “No Control.” They had several regional top-40 hits but disbanded after 3 of the members graduated college. Afterwards, he took a 15 year hiatus from music before joining the band “Rostek” out of Metuchen, NJ. In 2009, he moved to Houston, TX, where he didn’t become active in the music scene until early in 2013. Henry’s meeting of the band and Michelle was an interesting twist of fate. It was at an open mic when he ran into Michelle and shortly after realized this was the project he was looking for.
Chris Coon — Drums, Percussion – Born in Monticello, Arkansas, Chris started playing drums at the age of 8. He was fortunate to play on stage with his father’s band, Class Act, and open for Janie Freakie and Steve Warner.
He played for many years on church praise teams and for the Christian Rock bands Not Just Sunday, Realm of Influence and Worship One. In May of 2014, the stars finally aligned and he was able to join Sawdust Road.
