Kannika’s singing career has seen her hold residencies in Phuket and Hua Hin. Now based in Nakhon Ratchasima she is working with Lonely Beach Music who are writing, recording and distributing her music.
Kannika was born in Southern Thailand and started to sing at a very early age. She sang right thru her school days and after leaving college got a residency at a local club. Encouraged by her mother, she had no formal training at all but would practice at home singing along with her favourite artists.
As she improved and people began to take notice she achieved residencies in major venues firstly in Kiri Khan but then Phuket and Hua Hin where she fronted bands. Eventually she came to Nakhon Ratchasima in North east Thailand where she is now a resident.
Kannika works the clubs in the city either with a band or having taught herself guitar, as a solo acoustic artist. She cites Tina Turner and Janis Joplin as her biggest influences though she also has a liking for Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.
On a completely different level she likes Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Adele and includes their material in her acoustic set. When we were looking for a singer to take on some of the songs she was recommended to us and we went to see her.
We had seen many singers but Kannika stood out and was chosen to do her first single ‘Why Me’. Her second ‘I’m Watching You’ has just been released and work already started on her third.
We are currently looking at putting a professional band together for her to tour both in Thailand and overseas.
Her background team
Purple Hippo is undoubtedly one of the best studios in Thailand. Located in Nakhon Ratchasima, 4 hours from Bangkok, the studio works with artists from all over the world, has every technology that is current and even stuff that goes back to analog days for those that prefer that sound. It has its own accomodation for artists and a nice pool for relaxing after a hard day. It is staffed by Ian Davies from the UK who has worked with The Cure, Culture Club and many others and Acke Gardeback from Sweden who has worked for many years with Abba and Ace of Bass and others. Between them they boast 35 number 1’s. Material is written by Peter Reeves ex band and session bassist.
Music scene in Thailand
Is behind most other countries and is not conducive at all for developing talent. The venues do not exist to allow artists to progress except in Bangkok but even then are few and far between. There is therefore no venue hierarchy and artists tend to just stay on the same level. There are many very small bars the occasional larger venue but little in between. Musicians are not encouraged to be creative as the majority of audiences want to hear ‘covers’ and the Thai’s themselves don’t usually frequent venues for bands unless they are singing in Thai which is a major drawback. Bands or artists playing original material are usually then very few and often ignored. Musicians here are often talented players but in the main playing covers only copy others thus not developing the originality they are quite capable of.
